What does a Nurse Advocate do?
A nurse advocate provides emotional support, health education, expert knowledge of the healthcare system, communication and problem-solving skills to improve patient outcomes. A nurse advocate will decipher the medical jargon, clarify your treatment plan, options and, protect your rights as a patient.
How much does a Nurse Advocate cost?
Your Nurse Advocate will offer a free 30-minute initial consultation after which you and the nurse will discuss your needs and whether an Advocate is an appropriate choice. Sometimes, a client may need only a resource or referral and once the Advocate provides a contact number, the client may need nothing further. This example is often provided at no charge. We acknowledge that everyone’s needs are different in complexity and, therefore pricing varies depending on the time involved. Following the free consultation, if client needs are identified, the client and Advocate agree on goals, discuss cost, and a contract for services is agreed upon before care begins.
Does Medicare or commercial insurance cover the cost of an Advocate?
While patient advocacy is not covered under health insurance plans including Medicare, it’s certainly an investment worth considering. Your Advocate strives to see you get timely, quality care and that often saves the client time, money and anguish.
Can the Nurse Advocate check my blood pressure and set up my weekly medications?
Your Nurse Advocate will not perform direct patient care. Nurse training and nursing experience allows them to make judgements that are vital to your health. However, in this role, their tools are education, guidance and communication. For example, the Nurse Advocate will call your physician to report your blood pressure is high and attend a physician appointment with you if you desire. Your Nurse Advocate does not administer medical treatments.
