Meet the Founder and Your Nurse Advocate:
Denise Rieman RN, BSN: a lifetime resident of Cincinnati, graduated with honors from the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing. Denise has 38 years of nursing experience, practicing direct patient care in areas of medical-surgical nursing, oncology, orthopedics and discharge planning. Twenty years of her career, Denise worked as a nurse for two national, commercial insurance companies. There, she trained as a health coach perfecting her communication technique using Motivational Interviewing. She also gained valuable knowledge of the ‘ins and outs’ of private insurance, as well as Medicare coverage options.
Her personal experience managing her aging parents for several years was perhaps her greatest challenge. She provided hands-on care, medical treatments, financial management, saw them through transition of care at a nursing home and was awarded guardianship of her mother by the court. Denise knows firsthand the challenges of working and raising a family all while caring for elderly parents.
Denise is active in the Parkinson’s Disease community in her suburb of Cincinnati, fundraising and educating about the disease. She leads a monthly support group for Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers. She is committed to improving quality of life for patients with neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, Lewy Body Dementia, Alzheimer Disease and others.

An Advocate Can Help with Navigating the Healthcare System:
Consider the story about Leah. Sept 2015, Leah, a nurse herself, noted some sensations in her right arm and right foot; a feeling of muscle squeezing and sometimes, painful muscle cramping. By Thanksgiving of that year, she had difficulty cutting meat with her right hand, whisking an egg, even buttoning a blouse. She first went to her primary care physician who concluded her exam was normal. She was then referred to a neurologist who did a complete work up including MRI’s and EMG, all which were normal. While continuing to visit the neurologist, Leah chose to visit an orthopedic MD in hopes of finding an answer regarding the right hand and foot symptoms to no avail. Finally, after 19 months without diagnosis or treatment from these practitioners, Leah sought an evaluation by a specialist in neurology called a movement disorder specialist. Movement specialists in her area were booked for several months into the future. She was, however, able to book an appointment with another movement specialist 4 hours away. It was literally less than 10 minutes in this specialist’s exam room that Leah was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Her story, of course, doesn’t end there. She began treatment meant to control her symptoms and, she began to educate herself how to manage this lifelong condition.
This story demonstrates how complex and inadequate our healthcare system has become. Could someone without a medical background be able to navigate the healthcare system more successfully and with such tenacity? It is exhausting and overwhelming. That is where a Nurse Advocate can help. Don’t WAIT! Connect with us today!
